Cold weather on the lake can make for some very interesting conditions for photography.
The windy conditions keep the water from freezing, but the -5ºF temperatures will create some beautiful sea-smoke. There were several days of these conditions this week and I was lucky enough to have some time to shoot a few photos. The first few images of the lighthouses were taken by the shipping canal.
On my way home, I spotted a ship lumbering through the fog and spun around to find a suitable place to get a shot before it entered the harbor. I also experimented a bit the following day at a favorite beach.
And finally… I first saw this abandoned truck stop years ago and always thought it would make for a great photo, but I never stopped. It's not near my home, and I rarely travel on that road, but I happened to pass it last week. Unfortunately, the light wasn’t great and about half the sign was gone. Running low on time, I hopped out of the car, climbed the bank along the road, and grabbed this shot. I recreated the sign in Photoshop after finding an old Street View image of the site. It isn’t a great shot, but I was happy to at least give it a try. It’s a great reminder to go for it when the opportunity presents itself. Don’t wait. Thanks for looking!
I love these shots in black and white! Your compositions helped demonstrate their mystery.
I love the Ghost ship image.
