I grew up in in the woods. We lived 6 miles from the nearest town, at the end of a dead end gravel road, on the edge of a state forest. It’s a beautiful area. There is a small lake, a few cabins, and three year round homes. My parents bought their house over 40 years ago and it has always been a place with a lot of meaning for me. I visit as often as I can.
Although there is an abundance of natural beauty surrounding my childhood home, there is not a lot that stands as obvious photography subject matter. There are no grand waterfalls, mountains, or vistas commonly seen in popular landscape photography. Still, I always bring a camera when I visit and am always on the lookout for something to shoot. In the past I would sometimes get frustrated at the lack of subject matter, but lately I have been trying to slow down and notice the less obvious.
These photos were taken during my most recent visit on a walk down the wooded road I have driven down countless times. These images are nothing spectacular, but sometimes simple, unassuming compositions are my favorite.
Humility. This artist approaches his subjects with respect, awe and humility--even the silly shit. He spends his energy not just "catching" images but appreciating them. Maybe even "loving" them if "love" isn't too big a word.
